Organic Tea Estates

 

CEYLON RED TEA

To produce Ceylon Red Tea only the highest quality leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis are used.  There are no foreign substances that might affect the unique colour. It is highly oxidized, unlike green teas, and is produced by a special technology.

The worlds highest levels of tea leaf antioxidants are found in tea leaves grown in Sri Lanka. Teas grown in these high areas have been found to have a red colouring in the leaves, a desirable characteristic in the production of supreme quality red teas.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Compared with greent teas, Ceylon red tea is claimed to have much increased health properties.

High concentrations of polyphenolic antioxidants (Catechins) in these teas exceed 24% of dry mass.  This is probably the highest in the world. In addition, anthocyanin co-pigments are found, just as they are in red grape beverages, and similar fruits and berries. It is recognized as a nutritious food source with superior rejuvenating benefits.

This marvellous beverage features:

  • a desirable, soft energizing effect,
  • reductions in cholesterol
  • cancer-preventive properties

As such, it is very different to other herbal drinks which are being marketed as red tea. Markeintg teas like Hibiscus and Rooibos in this way is confusing and misleading for the consumer.  Ceylon red tea is truly a gift of paradise.

 

Ceciliyan Estate

In the Ruhuna district of Sri Lanka, which is the home of Ceylon Tea, the Ceciliyan estate is possibly the finest of all estates in the area.

The location in a little known sub region of Kalawana is on the very fringe of one of the worlds last remaining rain forests.

This environment has created a unique micro climate that results in a rare, sweet and caramel, full bodied tea brew that goes perfectly with milk.

Or, if drunk plain, its best to steep it for no more than 3 minutes, (unless you want your cup of tea to be Ceciliyan strong).

 

 

Sanquar Estate

Up in the Kandy district, almost 3,000 feet above sea level, you will find the Sanquar estate nestled in the valley and surrounded by blue mountains and delightful cascading water falls.

There is a historical value to this beautiful property which is said to be the hideout of king Dutugemunu, before he was crowned king of Sri Lanka.

It is found in the mid countr, wet zone, experienc a range of monsoon climates, with

  • average temperature 25-30°C
  • annual rainfall of 2 mts

This is another plantation with history, going back to the 1800’s.  If is one of the oldest tea plantations in Sri Lanka.

Since August 1999 a part of this ancient estate has been used exclusively for the organic cultivation  of teas, and no chemicals or synthetic fertilizer have been used.  As a result, the estate obtained “organic status” from SKAL international.

Now more than 60% of the estate is devoted to organic cultivation.  The remainder, whilst not organic, uses only minimal chemicals far below the recommended organic levels. These strict measures at Sanquar enable it to produce some of the “cleanest tea” in the country.
